Chapter 12

Emmy

We gather our things after dressing. Arik wants to climb above instead of swimming across the river again. I follow him as he artfully scales up the canyon wall, growling at the creatures above. They disperse to my surprise.

He reaches the top before me and looks around, nodding. “They’re gone.” His hand comes down to help me clamor up the rest of the way.

I breathe a huge sigh of relief. The canyon is very tall and looks over the river to the other side where the Oscith are pacing back and forth. I shudder as we walk away.

“We can reach the mine entrance this way.” Arik walks in the direction of the rising sun.

Suddenly, Arik stops, his eyes wide as he grabs me, shoving me behind him. The Oscith surround us as if they have appeared out of nowhere. Arik growls and advances toward them, but there’s so many that they no longer fear him. He pulls his spear from his side and swings it at them. Several advance toward us, and two grab me, pulling me away from him.

“Arik! Help!” The Oscith drag me away.

Arik fights the Oscith that keep landing on top of him. He turns to me, his face skewed in torture.

“Be calm, Emmy. Don’t fight. I’ll find you.” They drag him in the opposite direction.

I do as he says because I don’t want them to hurt me.

“Please, just let me go. My mate will come after you,” I say in hopes they understand me. They don’t and we trudge down a hill and into their territory. Soon after, I’m thrust into a wooden pen, the door shutting and locking as I stumble to the back of it.

The Oscith leave me and I step to the gate, pushing on it. The pen is made of rough wood and isn't as sturdy as it appears. The entire pen wobbles when I shake it. An Oscith looks sharply in my direction and I stand back, not wanting him to know that I might escape.

They are hyped up about something else in their midst and appear to ignore me. I wiggle the gate as quietly as possible until an opening is made. Crawling through, I look back to make sure no one has seen me and take off running. Knowing that these things track scent, I head down a hill and find a stream leading to the river. Quickly, I remove as much clothing as possible and shove it into my bag. Then I dive into the stream and cover myself in mud to mask my scent. I take off running in the opposite direction as fast as I can in hopes of losing them.

Their wails reach me. They must have discovered I escaped. My feet move all the faster and I hope that I am far enough ahead that they can’t find me. I reach the jungle and head right into it. The bush is thick and the branches are low. No time to maneuver carefully, I barrel straight into the thick of it, the lower branches cutting into my skin.
